My journey across North Carolina begins this week with a trip to Asheville and then to Charlotte. If there are people I should meet, schools I should visit, or cultural experiences not to be missed, please email me at mrash@EdNC.org.

This week, May 8-12, is Teacher Appreciation Week. This year’s theme is “Teachers Deliver.” The national PTA website says, “Teachers deliver so much to our students — inspiration, motivation and, ultimately, their futures.” To participate in Teacher Appreciation Week, share a photo of you and your favorite teacher on Twitter with the hashtag #ThankATeacher.

The Schools of Opportunity Recognition Program recognizes public high schools around the nation that are creating remarkable opportunities to learn for all their students. They are accepting applications until May 15 — apply now!

The North Carolina Charter Schools Advisory Board will meet today, Monday, May 8, from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh. The agenda is available on the State Board of Education’s website under the Meetings tab. The meeting will be audio streamed for those who cannot attend.

Each year the Public School Forum of North Carolina reserves complimentary tickets for North Carolina educators to attend the Jay Robinson Education Leadership Award Gala. The event will be held on May 18, 2017, at the Raleigh Convention Center from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The Forum will be honoring former North Carolina Senator Howard N. Lee. The reception starts at 6:00 PM and the dinner and program is at 7:00 PM. Complimentary educator tickets will be given on a first come, first served basis. Teachers, click here to put your name on the request list.
